Aristotle’s efforts here went towards producing a rival theory to Plato’s forms. He opposed, like Plato, the sophistic relativism, but he felt that the Forms caused neither movement nor change, nor helped to understand what is real and what is knowable.

Instead he proposed that Substance was a fusion of Matter and Form.
